"Onimusha" is Japanese for "demon warrior." While Capcom's hugely popular series emphasizes hack-and-slash action, its basic premise -- warring factions aided by magic in feudal Japan -- makes it a natural for a strategy game ? la Ogre Tactics.

The backstory has underworld overlord Genma, abetted by the evil Nobunaga, plotting to conquer the country of Iga. Onimura, a young man of the Ogre clan off to learn greater swordsmanship, is abruptly summoned by his Master Momochi. Hurrying home, Onimura encounters and engages Genma's legion of demon warriors.

Assaying the role of Onimura, each player must direct units to capture each battle map. Working from a world map, you can select items, enhance equipment and beef up legions. You can also select warriors for the next battle map. Victory is the reward for shrewdly exploiting topography, deploying legions and items, and unleashing your unique abilities.
